Desire can have dire consequences

Two years ago, David Madden made a mistake that almost cost him his marriage. His wife, Alison, gave him another chance, but she has not forgotten, nor has she forgiven.

She is irresistible

Then David meets the alluring Nina at a theatre in London. When he loses his phone in the dark, she helps him find it, and by giving her his number he unwittingly invites her into his life.

What David initially views as an innocent flirt turns into a dangerous game of deception. His increasingly suspicious wife thinks something is up, and each lie he tells pushes them further apart.

She is insatiable

Nina pursues David relentlessly, following him to New York where she gives him an ultimatum: sleep with her, just one time, and then she’ll get out of his life forever; or she’ll ruin everything he holds dear.

She is unstoppable

Of course, once won’t be enough for Nina, and what David hoped would be the end is merely the beginning.

A modern-day Fatal Attraction, Just One Time is a steamy psychological thriller that will have you hooked from the first page and holding your breath until its shocking conclusion.

Review

Writing as K.S. Hunter, Just One Time is the new novel by an international bestselling author whose real identity is being kept under wraps.

Protagonist, David Madden, is happily married to Alison until one indiscretion jeopardises that marriage. Fast-forward two years on and David is still doing everything he can to save his relationship and ensure that his young daughter, Maddie, grows up with both her parents.

However, a chance encounter in a theatre sets off a chain of events leaving David facing a dilemma – whether to give in to the temptation of Nina, the woman of his dreams, or whether to stand by his conscience and try to save his marriage.  David finds himself a victim of his own lust as events take a dark and dangerous turn.

In my opinion, David doesn’t generally come across as a bad person. However, I did find his weak nature to be rather frustrating. He is easily manipulated by Nina and obviously led by an organ other than his brain. He persuades himself that he’s dammed if he does or dammed if he doesn’t, yet to me his situation wasn’t initially that dire. The threats that Nina makes could initially be explained as an obsession, yet David’s response to Nina’s threats ensures that the situation will escalate. David is given to introspection and sees himself as a victim.  I found that I wanted to give him a hard shake, point out that his own actions are the cause of his predicament and tell him to just ‘man up’. Personally, I don’t have any sympathy with unfaithful spouses, however it certainly makes for an interesting story!

The plot flows well and the author knows how to create suspense. I found that the tension gradually built throughout the tale, culminating in a shocking end to the book. The book is relatively short and I think this helped in setting the pace, as the story is certainly not short on content.

Just One Time is a fast-paced psychological thriller, working with a theme reminiscent of the movie Fatal Attraction. It is a gripping tale of obsession, lust and lies, culminating in rather terrifying finale.

Just One Time does have an erotic element to it, however the more explicit scenes do tie in with the story and do add some tension to the story.

Recommended for anyone looking for a quick-paced and steamy psychological thriller.
